How Auto-ID works
similar to alarm-tags - alarm if tag not deactived after paid
concept taken from technology from '40, tags on aircrafts (friend or foe)

- ePC generated, unique code
- smart-tag: microchip with antenna and small capacitor
- sticked on can → becomes unique
- reading
- electro-magnetic field loads cap
- enough energy for m.chip
- m.chip sends ePC
- internet or Lan translates ePC in usefull information (PML)
- ePC
- ePC similar to barcode (12 digits/ ~36 bits)
- but much bigger (96bits)
- OSN (object name service) translate code in internet-adress
- PML
- PML = physical markup language
- parts, length, mass, ...
- can describe in topdown, transport vehicle, containers, items
both could be saved on CDs/weekly (backup), if inet fails

What Auto-ID can do
may redefine the way things are made, bought and sold
- Consumer
- products that communicate: product may provide cooking inst. for microwave, supply-info to refrigator, fabric-care inst. to washing machine
- shopping on-demand: food orderd autmatically as it runs out
- increase human safety: medications warn of harmfull combinations
- get info about product via PDA or cell phone @shop
- Business
- information about inventory: precise and detailed info on when, where & by whom an item was made
- production/delivery on-demand: know when item leave factory and when sold, increase accuracy with which products made, shipped, delivered, and stocked → (leads to) enhanced costumer sevice.
- saves billions, nowadays lost 'cause of lost, stolen, wasted products
- Enviroment
- waste reduction: smart produ gets reused throughout suplly & demand cycle, products may be moved back to manufacturer after use →
- recycling: nowadays waste can't be identified, with auto-id it an be sorted and re-used easly

Security Issues
and other problems
- tracking
- everyone tracked via items, ie. pornography. but reader must near smart-tag. detailed information (via PML) restricted. solution destroy or throw away smart-tag
- cheating
- false smart tag could send other ePC-code. solution shops only accept ePC-codes in stock
- expensive
- still cost ~20 cents/tag, researches think dev may lead to costs less a penny/tag
